The three studies that matter most

Separation & car-travel stress

B

A single dose of cannabidiol (CBD) positively influences measures of stress in dogs during separation and car travel

Hunt, Flint, Logan & King · Frontiers in Veterinary Science · 2023

n = 40 Placebo-controlled, blinded crossover 4 mg/kg, single dose

A single 4 mg/kg dose before separation and car-travel tests reduced several stress indicators (including serum cortisol and stress-related behaviors) versus placebo. Effects were modest and measure-dependent — not a sedative-style knockout.

Noise & fireworks fear

C

The impact of feeding cannabidiol (CBD) containing treats on canine response to a noise-induced fear response test

Morris et al. · Frontiers in Veterinary Science · 2020

n = 32 Placebo-controlled, randomized ~1.4 mg/kg (treats)

CBD treats alone did NOT significantly reduce measured fear responses to noise versus placebo. An honest negative: the fireworks use-case has the weakest supporting evidence, and dose/format may matter.

Shelter stress & aggression

B-

Cannabis sativa L. may reduce aggressive behaviour towards humans in shelter dogs

Corsetti et al. · Scientific Reports · 2021

n = 24 Controlled, shelter population Titrated CBD oil, daily

Shelter dogs receiving CBD showed reduced aggressive behavior toward humans versus control. Stress behaviors overall didn't change significantly — a real but narrow effect in a high-stress population.

Questions, answered plainly

Does CBD actually work for dog anxiety?
The honest answer: promising, not proven. One good placebo-controlled trial found a single 4 mg/kg dose reduced stress measures during separation and car travel. But the controlled fireworks trial found no significant effect from CBD treats alone. We grade every outcome on the evidence page so you can see exactly where the science stands.
How much CBD should I give my dog?
Studies used 1–2 mg per kg of body weight twice daily for ongoing support, and a single 4 mg/kg dose before a stressful event. Our calculator converts that to your dog's weight and your bottle's strength. Start at half the standard dose for the first week, and loop in your vet.
Is CBD safe for dogs?
Safety data is actually the strongest part of the evidence: six months of daily 4 mg/kg dosing was well tolerated in a controlled trial. The known signals are drowsiness, soft stool, and elevated ALP liver enzymes at higher doses — which is why vets suggest bloodwork for long-term use. THC is toxic to dogs; only use pet-specific, THC-free-or-trace products. Full safety guide.
Will CBD sedate my dog?
At studied doses, CBD is not a sedative. Trials describe reduced stress behaviors, not knocked-out dogs. Mild drowsiness can appear at higher doses — if your dog seems flattened, the dose is too high or the product contains something it shouldn't (check the COA).
What should I look for on a COA?
Three things: the cannabinoid potency matches the label (±10%), THC is under 0.3% (ideally non-detect for isolate/broad spectrum), and the pesticide/heavy-metal/solvent panels all pass. Every product in our comparison has a published, batch-matched COA — it's our first filter.
