Format guide

CBD oil: the format with the receipts

Every positive controlled result in dogs came from oil. It's also the cheapest per milligram and the only format that hits an exact mg/kg dose — here's how to use it well.
B

Our evidence grade

Oil is the evidence-backed format: it's what the successful trials dosed, it hits exact mg/kg targets, and with food it absorbs best.

Why oil keeps winning

Choosing bottle strength

Match the bottle to the dog: under ~20 lb, a 150–300 mg bottle keeps doses from being a single tiny drop; 20–50 lb dogs sit comfortably on 600 mg; big dogs on daily dosing belong on 1,200–3,000 mg bottles or the price-per-mg gets silly. The calculator shows mL and drops for any combination.

The studies behind this page

Separation & car-travel stress

B

A single dose of cannabidiol (CBD) positively influences measures of stress in dogs during separation and car travel

Hunt, Flint, Logan & King · Frontiers in Veterinary Science · 2023

n = 40 Placebo-controlled, blinded crossover 4 mg/kg, single dose

A single 4 mg/kg dose before separation and car-travel tests reduced several stress indicators (including serum cortisol and stress-related behaviors) versus placebo. Effects were modest and measure-dependent — not a sedative-style knockout.

Pain & comfort (context)

B

Pharmacokinetics, safety, and clinical efficacy of cannabidiol treatment in osteoarthritic dogs

Gamble et al. (Cornell) · Frontiers in Veterinary Science · 2018

n = 22 Randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind crossover 2 mg/kg twice daily

The landmark Cornell trial: 2 mg/kg twice daily significantly reduced pain scores and increased activity in osteoarthritic dogs, with no observed serious adverse effects. Pain, not anxiety — but it anchors dosing and safety.

Safety & tolerability

A-

Long-term daily feeding of cannabidiol is well-tolerated by healthy dogs

Bradley et al. · Frontiers in Veterinary Science · 2022

n = 40 Randomized, placebo-controlled, 6 months 4 mg/kg daily, 26 weeks

Six months of daily 4 mg/kg CBD was well tolerated; ALP elevations occurred in some dogs without clinical signs. The best long-term safety data we have.

Questions, answered plainly

My dog hates the dropper. Tricks?
Don't fight the mouth — dose the food. Mix into a spoon of wet food, a lick mat smear, or a hollow toy stuffing. Absorption with fat is better anyway; direct-to-mouth is only 'better' in brand photography.
Does 'full spectrum' matter for anxiety?
Unproven in dogs — no head-to-head trials. The trials that worked used CBD-dominant oils. Pick spectrum by your THC tolerance (isolate/broad = none) and let COA quality and price-per-mg decide the rest.
How should I store it?
Cool, dark, capped — cannabinoids degrade with light, heat and air. A car glovebox in July will quietly kill a bottle's potency. Most oils hold potency 12–18 months stored properly.
Human CBD oil for my dog — okay in a pinch?
Sometimes, but check three things: THC content (must be trace/non-detect), no essential-oil additives (some are toxic to dogs), and the mg/mL math for precise dosing. Pet formulations exist mostly to get those three right by default.
